The 23-year-old Rios, of Oxnard, California, comes in with a perfect 21-0 (15 KO’s) record. Rios was a highly decorated amateur, winning the 2004 U.S. National Amateur Featherweight title. He was also an alternate on the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team and is currently ranked No. 10 in the world by the WBC. Rios is slated for a 10-round bout in the lightweight division. Belmontes, only 20 years old, has zoomed to an impressive 9-0 mark as a pro after an outstanding amateur career. The Corpus Christi native was a finalist in the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials and U.S. National Amateur champion. Belmontes will be fighting a six-round featherweight bout. Lopez didn’t have the amateur background of Rios or Belmontes, but has risen to prospect status via a flawless 15-0 ledger. Lopez didn’t turn pro until the age of 23, after college at Sam Houston State University, where he played football. He also played high school football and baseball at his alma mater, Corpus Christi Moody. Lopez is scheduled for eight rounds in the middleweight division. According to Arum, Corpus Christi fight fans are in for a special night. “We’re thrilled to be returning to one of the great fight towns in this country,” said the Boxing Hall of Famer. “We wanted to make it a special night for the many great fans there. They’re going to see some great young fighters being showcased as well as having an opportunity to honor some of the greats in Corpus Christi Boxing. And all for free or an opportunity to get a reserved seat for next to nothing.” Arum also noted the opportunity to host the event at Whataburger Field. “What a beautiful stadium, not just for baseball, but for a boxing event as well. And the fact that the Corpus Christi Hooks are owned by a Hall of Famer, Nolan Ryan, is even more fitting for the occasion.” This will be the second induction ceremony for the Corpus Christi Boxing Hall of Fame. Previously, Corpus Christi boxers Jesse Benavides, Lupe Suarez, Roberto Elizondo, Frankie Warren and Lefty Barrera were inducted. The new inductees are to be announced. Whataburger Field has been selected as the top minor league venue in North America each of the last two years in fan balloting conducted by Minor League News. Constructed at a cost of approximately $25 million, the facility opened for the Hooks’ inaugural 2005 season. The venue has hosted events like the 2007 Texas League All-Star Game and August’s Bob Dylan/Willie Nelson/John Mellencamp concert.
